Join us for a special pop-up exhibition, “Hiwa-i-te-Rangi: The Wishing Star” by Penny Howard, to celebrate Matariki and Te Tau Hou Māori (the Māori New Year). The exhibition will take place in our Heritage Room, just off of Homestead Galleries, from June 1st to 14th.

During this time, we invite you to participate by writing your wishes, hopes, or karakia (prayers) for Matariki and Te Tau Hou on the back of a paper wishbone. Tie your written aspirations to Penny’s large whai (string game) using the miro whero (red thread).

Following this, join us for a dawn ceremony on the morning of June 15th, where all the collected wishes will be burned and sent up to Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, the wishing star. Everyone is welcome to participate in this meaningful ceremony. Let’s come together to celebrate Matariki and share our hopes and wishes with the universe. All are welcome to join!
