Toi MAHARA

Co-curated with Te Wānanga o Raukawa, He kete, he whiri, he tangata – ‘a basket, a plait, and people’ brings kete whiri to the forefront, connecting people of past and present.

It commemorates the traditional use of kete whiri in the daily tasks of collecting kai, transporting goods, or hanging or hoisting objects.  The kete with its whiri, or plait, at its base, is strong and durable.

This exhibition focuses on an area of learning within the Poutuarongo Toi Whakarākai programme of Te Wānanga o Raukawa. It makes special reference to the kete pipi, once a common sight on Ōtaki beaches.

It celebrates the continuation of the practice of an ancient skill, not because it is a necessity now, but because the artists love making them as a form of artistic expression.

Toi Mahara and Te Wānanga o Raukawa wish to thank and acknowledge the support of the Kāpiti Coast District Council Sustainable Arts Fund, as well as the weavers and photographed tūpuna included in this unique exhibition.
