Gisborne Canoe and Tramping Club, Avonden, Otoko

This is a 1 ½ to 2 hour circuit walk, visiting a pa site and an old quarry then climbing 240 metres to the top corner of the farm with 360 degree views taking in Arowhana, Hikurangi, Motukeo, Whakapunake and Bushy Knoll. There are three significant pa sites on Avonden Farm. The quarry was excavated on the northern side of the largest pa site in the 1930’s as a source of rock for construction of the railway to Moutohora. Contact Gillian Ward, grass.hopper@xtra.co.nz
