Find out what's the buzz about bees in this expert talk by Dr Jenny Jandt (Department of Zoology, University of Otago | Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka).
Aotearoa is home to 28 species of ngaro huruhuru | New Zealand native bees. Unlike honey bees, ngaro huruhuru are mostly solitary and small. They typically nest underground and go unnoticed by the general public, often being mistaken for small flies.
Though folks in Aotearoa are aware of the importance of bees as pollinators and the need to protect them, there is a disconnect in terms of providing undisturbed space for solitary bees to nest, as well as ensuring there are plants that flower throughout the spring, summer and autumn.
Maintaining healthy urban areas to support bee (and all insect) communities is one of the few actions community members can have control of as we experience the overwhelming consequences of global climate change.
