Explore Your Coast Wellington

Explore Your Coast is to raise awareness of our precious marine environment, and encourage greater engagement through education and recreation.

Explore Your Coast founder Dr. Nicole Miller has an ambitious goal to scuba dive and underwater video 70km of Wellington's coastline for the first time, over 3 weekends and Waitangi Day from 27 January to 11 February.

Community groups and public are invited to join Nicole on this journey and participate in various activities along the way.

Saturday 27 January 9am to 5pm
Day 1 9am Start with Coffee & Coast at Seaview Marina to wave our scuba divers off on the first dives to document 70km of the coastline. Wellington Sea Kayak Network group will paddle the Bays and Mountains to Sea Wellington is hosting a free community snorkel event at Taputeranga Marine Reserve in Island Bay 10am-3pm.

Sunday 28 January 9am to 6pm
Day 2 Starting at Island Bay the Explore Your Coast team will explore the Snorkel Trail at Taputeranga Marine Reserve, meet Wellington’s dive community at Princess Bay, and explore Moa Point, finishing at Tarakena Bay.

Our scuba divers continue documenting 70km of Wellington’s Blue Belt, Wellington Sea Kayak Network group will paddle the South Coast (Princess Bay to Ōwhiro Bay and return 10am- 12.30pm), and the Friends of Taputeranga Marine Reserve are hosting the annual Big Dive 2024 (12.30 -3pm) celebrating 15 years of Taputeranga Marine Reserve!
