Towering above in our ngahere/forest, the pines at Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne were originally planted as a forestry trial as early as the 1880s. When the sanctuary was established, some of the pines were not removed to prevent slips and as they were important habitat for many species in the upper canopy. However, as these aging trees are exotic and an increasing health and safety risk, we are beginning to remove them.
In this Conservation Kōrero, you’ll hear from Jo Ledington, General Manager of Conservation and Restoration and David Spencer, Director/Consultant Arborist at Tend Trees Consultancy about our plan for the pines over the long term (think 50-60 years), including our recent trials of veteranisation techniques to create habitat for native taonga– which haven’t been tried in Aotearoa yet!
This event will be held in the Pāteke Room in the Visitor Centre and refreshments will be provided. Doors open at 6.15pm.
