The KBB Music Festival is the largest regional youth music event in New Zealand involving over 4,500 young musicians. it showcases Symphony orchestras, Chamber Orchestras, Concert bands and Jazz bands in Auckland secondary schools and beyond. Formerly known as the Auckland Secondary Schools Band and Orchestra Festival, the Festival began in 1983 with a few schools combining and has since grown in both size and stature.
In 2023 the festival celebrated its 40th anniversary with 145 groups representing 52 schools in the greater Auckland region, as well as two schools from Kaitaia and the Waikato.
Adjudicated sessions will be running from Monday to Friday and are free entry. On Friday night there is a special Honors concert at 8.30om This year's concert features performances by the Honours Orchestra playing two movements from "The Planets" by Gustav Holst: Mars - The Bringer of War & Venus - The Bringer of Peace
Honors Jazz Band will be playing two pieces - Four by Miles Davis & "That Old Black Magic" by Arlen & Mercer.
The 2024 Gala Concerts will be held in the Holy Trinity Cathedral on Saturday 17th August with selected Chamber Orchestras and Concert bands performing at 2.00pm and Symphony Orchestras and Jazz Bands at 6.30pm. These are ticketed events, and each concert will close with an awards ceremony.
