Whangaehu Lahar Volcanic Floods 2023: CANCELLED

Discover the volcanic history of Mt Ruapehu on this off track hike down the lahar path from the top of the Tukino mountain road

Look at paths from the ancient Rangipo mega lahars, and the more recent (1995, 2007 x 2) lahar activity down the Whangaehu and at the site of the Bund (man-made barrier). Also make stops at the charred forest created by the Taupo blast.

Trip Length: 7 hours including travel to and from Turangi
Minimum Age: 10 years
Maximum Participants: 30. Minimum 5 participants for trip to proceed.

Cost: Free. Koha to Project Tongariro is greatly appreciated

Trip may be cancelled or postponed due to poor weather.

Participants are asked to bring the following:
- Waterproof and warm clothing
- Packed lunch and water
- Tramping boots
- Sunglasses/sunscreen/sunhat
- Gloves and warm hat
- Snacks and drinks
- Personal first aid kit
- Personal medication
- Camera (optional)
