Welcome to the 14th annual south coast cleanup, 10:30am-12:00pm 16th september 2023.

As well as caring for our coasts and oceans, it’s all about community! Join us at any of our cleanup locations for a morning of litter collection and family fun.

When
We kick off at 10:30am on the 16th September. We host clean up sites at 12 locations between Owhiro Bay to Breaker Bay on the Wellington South Coast. All rubbish will be gathered up around 12.15pm and taken to Lyall Bay by the playground to form one huge rubbish mountain that will be collected by the council.
Pitch in for a rubbish pile up at 12:30 at Lyall Bay playground where we will mound up our rubbish and admire our collective efforts!

What should you bring
Our hosts will be equipped with everything you need to safely smash out some litter picking, but please do along your own re-useable gloves and rubbish bag if you have them!
Bring along your family, workmates, flatties or four-legged friends where allowed.
We ask any groups 6+ to please get in touch with southcoastcare@gmail.com and we'll let you know where you'll be most help.

Where
Our fantastic friendly volunteer groups will be scattered along the coastline between Owhiro Bay and Breaker Bay. You can turn up at any of our volunteer sites:
1 Owhiro Bay
2 Opposite Dive Wellington
3 Island Bay
4 Island Bay Snorkel Trail
5 Houghton Bay
6 Te Raekahau Point
7 Lyall Bay (near boat ramp and Woof Woof Ruff)
8 Lyall Bay (by playground)
9 Lyall Bay (airport end)
10 Moa Point
11 Tarakena Bay
12 Breaker Bay
* Taputeranga Island for kayakers

Who
We are all local volunteers who love our beautiful South Coast. We are keen to keep it free of waste, preserve its natural beauty and help to look after our oceans and the wildlife that lives there.
We invite you, members of the public, schools, businesses, whanau, local groups and organisations to join us, along with hundreds of thousands of volunteers at other places around the world, to take part in the Ocean Conservancy 's International Coastal Clean-up week.

Bad weather
Whether it’s sunhat or rain jacket weather, we’ll be out there so make sure to dress for the occasion! However, if there is severe weather scheduled, we will cancel. Keep an eye on our event pages for updates closer to the event.
