URUAO is a development piece created by Savanah Tukariri, Kereana Mosen and Kerepeti Paraone.
Uruao was one of the waka that brought our people to Te Waipounamu. Rākaihautū one of the first inhabitants in the Christchurch area captained Uruao and during his journeys created his food storage house, Te Pātaka o Rākaihautū (Banks Peninsula) then Te Kete-ika a Rākaihautū (Lake Ellesmere) and many of the lakes further south. After his travels were done, Te Waka Uruao left this world and took its place in the stars.
Te Waka Uruao is said to both be a star constellation and a destination where the wairua can travel and the veil between our world and that of those already gone is like a mirror. Our Kaiurungi (Navigator) takes us on their final voyage through the stars. However, they are tasked with imparting their knowledge onto a new passenger.
Through movement, music and light URUAO explores pūrākau and the importance - and at times, difficulties of passing on roles and knowledge between the generations past, present and future.
Uruao ki uta, Uruao ki tai, Uruao ki te rangitūhāhā.
