How mountains are made: Unravelling the secrets of the Himalayas

Professor Michael Petterson, AUT’s first Professor of Geology and Acting Dean of the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, is holding a public talk on Thursday, 9 November, at 4:30 p.m., at WA Conference Centre, AUT City Campus.

This illustrative lecture is inspired by Michael’s recent book, Geology of the Ladakh Region (NW India), and decades of geological wanderings in Afghanistan, north Pakistan, Tibet, and Bangladesh, and explores how the Himalayas were formed, their character and variety, and, alongside their geology, landscape, and tectonics, aspects of their influence on nations, transport, global climate, culture, and philosophy.

The Himalayas are a majestic natural barrier that shapes the history and politics of Asia to this day. Anyone who loves mountains (and these are the greatest of earth's mountains), geology and geography, central Asian geopolitics, mystical mountain cultures, and mantras will enjoy this event.

All are welcome, and refreshments will be served after the talk.

Please RSVP by 30 October via email to hesinternalcomms@aut.ac.nz.
