The Panimals are set to release their debut EP ‘Steel Soup’ on 29th August celebrating New Zealand Steelpan Day.

The Panimals are a vibrant and dynamic steelband from Bream Bay College students. These high school students set out to captivate audiences with their boundless energy and infectious enthusiasm. With their exceptional talent and unwavering passion for music, this group pushes the boundaries of traditional steelpan music, constantly exploring new territories to create an unforgettable live experience.

At the core of The Panimals' sound is the captivating sound of steelpan drums. Originating from Trinidad and Tobago, these instruments are traditionally associated with Caribbean music. The Panimals embrace these roots and add their own kiwi flair to their repertoire.

The much anticipated release is a culmination of The Panimals journey and a step into a new realm with recording their music. Niel de Jong from Hammerhead Productions recorded, mixed and mastered the project at Bream Bay College’s facilities. The project was exciting for the students, particularly tracking overdubs and adding different layers of percussion. Niel also has his own Recording Studio where he has recorded Alien Weaponry’s latest album and more.

The Panimals innovative approach involves incorporating an eclectic mix of genres into their arrangements, infusing elements of jazz, reggae, latin rhythms, calypso, and even rock into their set. This is the meaning behind ‘Steel Soup’ as there is a mix of everything in there, but as a whole is a cohesive piece of work.
