Ruhanui - An Exhibition by Java Bentley, Brook Konia, Ripeka Paapu and Te Haana Paewai

The pre-dawn rising of stars signal and name the moon cycles or months of the Māori lunar year. With the shortfall of eleven days every year between the lunar and solar calendars, a thirteenth month is included every third lunar year.
This thirteenth month is called Te Ngāhuru Mā Toru o Ruhanui, after the star Ruhanui, which is paired in the sky with Pipiri, the star associated with Te Tahi o Pipiri (June).
This intercalary moment of Ruhanui has inspired this exhibition. It marks a new year and a new three-year cycle. For all of us, it ends a chapter and determines the start of a new beginning.
