Presented by The Incubator Creative Hub, join us at the Village Community Cinema for our cinematic concept series. Picture this - The Inspiration Behind The Creation.
In this series, artists share with us the film that has influenced or inspired their artistic practice, analytically reflecting on their work in correlation with their chosen film.
On March 10th, we will be joined by artist John Baxter as he shares insights into his artistic practice, followed by a screening of his chosen film, 'Quadrophenia'.
Originally from Yorkshire, England, John Baxter is a Tauranga based artist, musician
and photographer with a Diploma in Creative Industries. John is one of the founding members of The Incubator Creative Hub as well as a respected contributor of photographs, articles and interviews to many local publications and online forums.
The film Quadrophenia draws parallels with his own life, concerning a succession
of early mind-numbing jobs, daily struggles with so-called figures of authority and
drawing his conclusions about whether it is worth trying to “fit in”. Having lived that life on the edge with 2 wheels during his teenage years (and beyond) and having the Punk DIY ethos on art and culture, John takes us on a journey through abstract ways of seeing and thinking about life with a zen-like approach to blocking out the everyday noise and grind through colour and shape, through repetition and through the use of hidden political and social references.
