Matariki Arrowtown Lights is a one day cultural event to remember, on Friday 14th July, in the heart of Arrowtown (known by tāngata whenua as Kā-Muriwai).
Join us for the second year, that will once again showcase a stunning display of visual storytelling and light displayed projections down Buckingham Street. The afternoon will be opened with a mihi (welcome) followed by a karakia and songs by Waiatatia group, followed by performances by local kapa haka primary and high schools and back by popular demand is Professor Brian Boyle, the world’s pre-eminent astrophysicist sharing the wonders of the Otago night skies. New this year will be extra kai/food stalls and fire pits to be able to gather and share stories, telling pakiwaitara over kai.
Matariki Arrowtown Lights 2023 will be a koha/gold coin donation event for all ages.
“Matariki is a time for reflection and welcoming the promise of a new year. After the tough few years we’ve all had, we are ready to celebrate life, our Aotearoa heritage and to be reminded how lucky we are to be where we are, with our clear night skies and stunning environment.”
The excitement of the Matariki Arrowtown Lights will be visible as night falls until 10pm as you wander down Buckingham Street and the surrounding laneways and alleyways of historical Kā-Muriwai/Arrowtown.
We have an exciting schedule of events so keep an eye on our social media pages or follow us on our Facebook and Instagram for the latest information to get the most out of your visit to Kā-Muriwai Arrowtown.
