Mata Ariki at Pukepuke – Exhibition Opening
Mata Ariki at Pukepuke is a community art project led by artists Feeonaa Clifton and Ani O’Neill of Ariki Stars to celebrate Matariki 2023 at Nathan Homestead Pukepuke.
In the weeks leading up to Matariki 2023, nine large woven stars will be created for Mata Ariki at Pukepuke through a collaborative process of shared making across the wider Manurewa community.
We are excited to have local iwi groups, artists, weavers, crafters and community members of all ages and levels joining the nine-week weaving process from May 1st to July 2nd. Together we bind our collective aspirations through small moments of soulful and joyful play.
This project hopes to encourage all generations to learn more about Matariki and each of the star’s stories.
Traditionally, the rising of the Matariki cluster is a time for Māori to acknowledge those close to them who have passed away, a time to gather and enjoy the harvest of today, and a time to make plans for the future.
