Toi MAHARA

Using the Māori well-being model Hauora, “Home” represents a whare where each wall represents the different aspects of a persons well-being. Each aspect – Physical; Mental; Spiritual; Family/society; and Identity requires the same care and attention or the structure of the whole will be weakened. We want to encourage viewers to reflect on their own wellbeing in all the different aspects.
Pane-iraira – (whale taniwha)

When Māori made their way over the the Sea of Raukawa (the cook straight) and found themselves in trouble they would recite a karakia to Pane-iraira and the sea-god would appear. His sacred mana would smooth the seas as he swam alongside the waka. As we recreate this taniwha, we recreate the Pūrākau of the oceans that surround us.
