An exhibition featuring Yon Yi Sohn, Moonhee Han, and Eun Jung Jang.

Listening to Lines is a collaboration inspired by Richard Long’s 1967 work titled A Line Made by Walking, included in Tim Ingold’s book Lines: A Brief History (Routledge, 2016). Tim Ingold noted that Richard Long’s lines are not made by additive or reductive activities that are usually associated with trails or traces, but by continuous and repetitive activities. This resonates with the practice of three Wellington-based artists whose works are based on repetitive methods, through an abstract concept and physical labour dialectic.

Yon Yi Sohn, Moonhee Han, and Eun Jung Jang collaborate in this exhibition of drawing, painting, embroidery and installation of ‘lines’ - the basic element of visual storytelling. Yon Yi Sohn explains the concept behind the exhibition title: “As our works develop, we are constantly responding to the ways that the patterns emerge and colours interact - I see this as a relationship between the teller of the tale and the tale itself being told. As Gerhard Richter, my inspiration, once said, “the pictures started to instruct me”, and I listen to my lines.
