Melanie Fleet presents her second solo exhibition as part of La Fiesta: NZ's best Women's Festival 2023.

This exhibition is about finding empowerment in the historical sexist term - "Know Your Place". This term was quite often used against women as a way to say - accept your position within society, your organization, your family, etc. Accept where you are and do not try to improve it.

However, when Melanie asked her daughters, both young adults, what this term meant to them - they didn't know it as a put down, they knew it as a term of self exploration or empowerment - knowing their place was a positive and not negative.

Therefore, throughout this exhibition you will find pieces that play on historical feelings of oppression for women, as well as the tide change that saw women grow their voice and say - fuck that, I know my place and I will do what I like.

Look at each piece carefully and see if you can find the hidden sexism as well as the mirrored empowerment.
