Carving is a unique method for making jewellery, being reductive rather than constructive.  Faced with a block of material the carver must eliminate, and remove the negative space to reveal the elusive desired shape.  It can seem like a backwards way of thinking.

In this workshop participants will be introduced to the processes and techniques used by Jane Dodd in making her jewellery.  Jane will present some ways she prepares for her work, how she attacks a lump of stuff and invite participants to have a go.  Materials commonly used by Jane will be provided.

Jane Dodd came to jewellery when already in her 30s, studying with Pauline Bern at Carrington/Unitec in Auckland, and then joining Workshop 6, an influential shared jewellery studio. There she developed her individual practice, taught public jewellery classes and collaborated in many group projects.  In 2009 she returned to her hometown of Dunedin where she works from her home studio. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in many private and public collections. In 2021 The Dowse Museum, Lower Hutt, held a survey show of nearly 30 years of Jane’swork. Entitled 'Wild Domain', the exhibition was accompanied by a handsome hardcover monograph.
