Writer and Art Curator, Peter Shaw, vividly recalls the exhibitions of paintings by Pauline Thompson shown at the Denis Cohn Gallery, Auckland during the 1980s. Drawn by their enigmatic content, highly accomplished paint technique and vivid sense of colour he has long planned this exhibition. The vagaries of fashion may have kept Pauline Thompson’s work out of the limelight but now Peter feels that people are better able to understand and enjoy her unique paintings.

Pauline Thompson, first exhibiting at the age of sixteen, trained at Elam where she found herself somewhat apart from the prevailing current of modernism. Undeterred, and determined to follow her childhood ambition, she continued painting. This is the first retrospective of her work since the artist’s death in 2012.

Join Peter at 2pm on Saturday 3 June for a guided Floor Talk through the exhibition.
