Ma Bell is well known and highly respected Christchurch based /Scottish born folk blues jazz singer songwriter and concert producer Isabella (Izzy) Miller Bell. Heralded to be one of NZ's most musical Scottish imports (NZMM 2003) she is arguably one of the finest acoustic blues singers in New Zealand. Ma Bell is the real deal, a story teller who leaves no stone unturned, from birth to death and all the juicy bits in-between.
Her guests include two time award winning slide/finger-style guitarist Susan Leigh Grant performing alongside Izzy as the Blues Mama's. The Blues Mama's have been performing together throughout the South for two decades. You can expect to hear some fine top shelf acoustic country blues and more. Special Guests include Sophia Bidwell and Manu Francois, two highly respected Waimakariri based musicians.
Born in the Caribbean Manu Francois is an eclectic and unique musical creator, heralded as a percussionist and widely known for his guitar playing and as a singer songwriter. With a warm soulful voice Manu performs original compositions and covers, both upbeat and beautifully crafted, food for the soul.
Originally a classical pianist, Sophia has been a convert to the piano accordion for many years. She is a highly respected musician in classical and folk circles throughout the South and plays with a number of bands including, Cafe Operana, Manuka Hunnies, and Doctor T and the Dangerous Women. Outside of her performance career she teaches music and sound technology and is head of music at Rangiora High School.
Join us for an afternoon of laid back superb sounds from original compositions and classic urban folk and country blues. This event is part of the Down by the River - Kaiapoi Music Series in association with the Acoustic South Series of projects kindly supported by Waimakariri Creative Communities.
