Crime and Punishment Tour

This tour through the cemetery features the graves of people who created and enforced the law, sat in the law courts and imprisoned the law-breakers. There’s a duellist, judges, lawyers, police and military law enforcers, and even a criminal or two.

Hear stories about the gaolers, judges and policemen who were dealing with the city's criminal elements, as well as some of the villains and murderers that shocked earlier generations in Wellington.

Learn about Thomas Hawkings (1849-1889), a settler living on the northern side of Kaiwharawhara with his wife Mary and nine children. His headstone states that he was murdered. On his way home from town with his horse and cart on 31 May 1889, he was attacked, shot at and stabbed several times, dying instantly.

Children aged 12 and under are free and do not need a ticket; well-behaved dogs, on leads, are welcome.
The tours include steps and walking on uneven surfaces and are not suitable for people with limited mobility.
