Bernina Northland Fashion Awards - Behind the Scenes 2023

The Bernina Northland Fashion Awards are returning for 2023 and we can't wait to see you again! The prestigious Awards showcase creative designer talent of all ages, stages and abilities.

This year, we're introducing a captivating "Behind the Scenes" Dress Rehearsal show to give you and your family an exclusive opportunity to catch a glimpse of the choreography and show refinements guided by our Creative Director, Daniel Matene! Come along and join us for a firsthand experience of where art and fashion collide.

ABOUT THE BERNINA NORTHLAND FASHION AWARDS:
Bernina Northland Fashion Awards is an iconic calendar event which began 46 years ago as a kindergarten fundraiser before evolving into a fun and vibrant night showcasing Tai Tokerau’s creative fashion talent, is returning after a successful 2022 event!

This year, there are three Wearable Art categories: Wearable Art, Cosplay and Masquerade (up to Year 8 only), with seven Fashion categories: Open Street Wear/Day Wear, Student Street Wear/Day Wear, Open Evening Wear, Student Evening Wear, Indigenous Fashion, Sustainable Fashion and Elizabethan Fashion (a special category for 2023!). Designers have been challenged to create an original fashion garment that encapsulates their creative interpretation of the second Elizabethan era, which ended with the unfortunate passing of the British Queen in 2022.

Each category has cash prizes provided by the generous sponsors of the event. The Overall Designer of the Year will win a Bernette b64 Air Thread Overlocker retailing at $2999 sponsored by Bernina Northland, while the Top Model will win a photography package sponsored by Arron Lilley Photography, valued at $1250. Some previous winners of the Bernina Northland Fashion Awards have gone on to excel in tertiary level education and carved out careers in the fashion and design industry internationally.

Supporting the Trust to deliver this year's 2023 event, is Daniel Matene, a well known Whangārei local with an eye for detail and an award winning hairdresser. After adding such an incredible creative flair to last year’s Bernina Fashion Awards show, Daniel is delighted to re-joining the team, with even bigger and wilder ideas than last year as Creative Director. Show judges Dame Denise L’Estrange-Corbet – New Zealand fashion designer and founder of WORLD, Hinurewa te Hau – Director, Creative Industries/Services of Creative Northland, and Regan Moyes – Co-Director of Bravado Hair Salon.
