Behind the Black Veil: “Northanger Abbey” and the “Horrid Novels”
Catherine Morland (Northanger Abbey) enjoys a very rich inner life. She sees the world around through the lens of books – and such books! The “Horrid Novels” she devours were the pulp fiction of Regency England. Shocking, scandalous, and fantastical they were just the sort of things that well-bred young ladies were warned not to read (but many in fact did, on the quiet).
I will offer an after-dark tour of these disreputable best-sellers. We will look at their characteristic plots, characters, style, with some audio-visual aids (trigger warning for the faint-hearted!). I will also note how these features of the Horrid Novels help shape the comedy of Northanger Abbey, and reveal some hidden truths about its earnest heroine.
Paul Stone works as a public servant in the field of education. He has recently acted the part of Sir John Middleton in a local production of Sense and Sensibility. He is well-placed to comment on the Horrid Novels as he has a lifelong terror of things that go bump in the night.
