The Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho was particularly fond of the ï¬ute, and in her 2001 concerto Aile du Songe the soloist is like âa lone, high ï¬ying bird whose shadow forms different imagesâ. Outstanding flautist Camilla Hoitenga is synonymous with the piece having performed the world premiere. Hoitenga has enjoyed a long association and close working relationship with Saariaho, who unfortunately passed away on 2 June 2023. APO dedicates the performance to Kaija Saariahoâs memory and the wonderful sound world she created.
Coplandâs meditative Quiet City, and especially his evergreen Appalachian Spring, are hymns to an America of open air, small towns, wide horizons.
Ravelâs fairytale ballet is a seamless ï¬ow of enchantment, ï¬nishing with a rapturous vision of a magical garden.
