'If the novel is dead, why do people keep emailing us?'

Join two of Aotearoa's best-loved authors - Pip Adam & Rebecca K. Reilly - as they discuss the past, present and future of books and writing in Aotearoa New Zealand. Hear their thoughts on what it’s like to be a writer, the NZ literary scene, what AI’s really all about, and much more besides that.

About Pip: I'm a queer, Pākehā writer who lives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. My new book ‘Audition’ will be published by Te Herenga Waka Press and Giramondo Press this year. Te Herenga Waka Press have previously published three of my novels: ‘Nothing to See’ (also published by Giramondo in 2020), ‘The New Animals’ (also published by the Dorothy Project in the USA in 2017), ‘I'm Working on a Building’ (2013), and the short story collection ‘Everything We Hoped For’ (2010). I'm a huge fan of Rebecca K. Reilly's work and love talking about fiction's relationship to the 'real' world and novels as machines. I make the podcast Better off Read https://betteroffread.substack.com/

About Rebecca: I am a queer Māori writer (Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Rehua ki Ngātiwai) from Waitākere, who lives in Central Auckland. My novel Greta & Valdin was published by Te Herenga Waka Press in 2021 and will be published by Hutchinson Heinemann in the UK and Avid Reader Press in the US in 2024. My writing revolves around the paradox of having emotions but also having to exist in the world with other people, and I am currently writing a novel about two people who are weird to each other over several decades, which has so far proved unpopular with test audiences. My personal interests include linguistics, geography and the film Bicentennial Man (1999). I believe that Pip Adam is one of the most interesting novelists working in the 21st Century.

This event is part of Wellington Pride Festival 2023. There will be the opportunity to give koha to the volunteer-run Festival on the door.
