Join us for a wonderful evening of words with New Zealand’s youngest ever Poet Laureate Chris Tse and his guests, noted poets Louise Wallace, Emma Barnes and Nathan Joe. An evening not to be missed!

A Big Night In is the evening event in the very special literary celebrations for the NZ Poet Laureate in Hawke's Bay. Chris will bring the handcrafted tokotoko he received from the official ceremony at Matahiwi Marae, his favourite poems and extraordinary friends to this celebration of talent.

Chris Tse (he/him) was born and raised in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. He studied film and English literature at Victoria University of Wellington, where he also completed an MA in Creative Writing at the International Institute of Modern Letters. In 2022, he was named the 13th New Zealand Poet Laureate.

His poetry, short fiction, and non-fiction have been recorded for radio and widely published in numerous journals, magazines and anthologies, including Best New Zealand Poems, Sport, Turbine, The New Zealand Listener, Fishhead, Landfall, Asian Cha, Poetry New Zealand Year Book, Sweet Mammalian, Cordite Poetry Review, Poetry, Capital Magazine, The Spinoff, and Mimicry.

Tse was one of three poets featured in AUP New Poets 4 (2011). His first collection How to be Dead in a Year of Snakes (2014) won the Jessie Mackay Award for Best First Book of Poetry and his second book He’s So MASC was published to critical acclaim in 2018. He is co-editor of AUP’s Out Here: An Anthology of Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ Writers from Aotearoa, published in 2021.

His latest book Super Model Minority (2022) was longlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards 2023.

Doors open at 7pm.

Presented by Hawke's Bay Readers & Writers Trust and The National Library of New Zealand.
