Otago Museum

Otago Museum’s Kura Pounamu exhibition explores pounamu’s many complex and interrelated stories. At this show and tell, Dr Simon Cox and Dr Nick Mortimer, principal scientists at GNS Science (the Crown Research Institute of Geological and Nuclear Science), will look at the science of this treasured resource. Hear about the geological history and features of our special taoka. It's also a chance to get up close and hands-on examining jade and pounamu samples.

Do you have a burning pounamu question? What is the difference between jade, nephrite and pounamu? What makes these rocks different and special? Why does pounamu only occur in Te Waipounamu (the South Island)? And how many types of pounamu are there? This is the perfect chance to get them answered and learn more.

Following the Show and Tell, Dr Rock (aka geologist Nick Mortimer) would love to see your special stones and answer your geological questions on Atrium Level 1 from 1pm – 2pm.
