Join the Canterbury Film Society for weekly screenings of top-quality films – arthouse, classic, cult, documentary, world cinema and more – on the big screen at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū. We meet every Monday night at 7.30pm (6.30pm for two longer screenings this year), with breaks for public holidays.

Over nine months from February to October, our 2022 programme offers Ōtautahi film lovers a palette of 35 films and full membership provides access to all screenings – less than $4 per film!

We’ve made joining easy and there are membership prices to suit every pocket: choose one of our 12-month memberships (options for new/renewing, unwaged/65+/Film Guild members, high school and students), a half-year membership, or a $30 Flexi-Pass that gives access to any three films, may be shared amongst friends and has no expiry date. New members are warmly welcome and asked to come earlier than 7.30pm to speak to our membership team.

Our Society nurtures a friendly, welcoming atmosphere with food and drinks for purchase (cash only), guest introductions and opportunities to socialise. Doors open 30 minutes prior to film start time. Please assist us by bringing in no outside food or drink. Thank you :)

We adhere to all government guidelines for our screenings. Please check our website for up-to-date details of the Covid-19 safety requirements. (Under the orange traffic-light setting there is no capacity limit and a vaccine pass is no longer required, however, venue management requires visitors to wear a mask.)

This screening is director Ulrike Ottinger's ‘Under Snow’.

In Echigo, a mountainous region of Japan, heavy snow blankets entire landscapes and villages for more than half the year. 'Under Snow' captures the unique customs, festivals and religious rituals of communities isolated by their wintery environment and blends in a Kabuki retelling from ‘Snow Country Tales.’

A Germany production, 2011, minutes, 108 rating.

CFS brochures may be uplifted from the Christchurch Art Gallery, city libraries, WEA, Lumière and Alice cinemas, and Addington Coffee Co-op, or downloaded from our website.
