Two enfants terribles frame Grieg’s evergreen concerto, played by the marvellous British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor.
In his sensational 1995 opera, Powder Her Face, the 24-year-old Thomas Adès cast a sardonic eye over the sexual hypocrisy of the British upper classes. This exuberant suite is Adès’ version of thirties popular music, with a large helping of tango, seen through a diamond-hard lens.
Sixty years earlier, the ‘bright young thing’ of English music was William Walton. His first symphony is breathless, loud, and exhilarating. Fast-rising British conductor Alpesh Chauhan leads the APO in a cracker of a programme.
