Join the Glamaphones in our celebration of Matariki, Aotearoa New Zealand’s newest public holiday. We welcome you for an evening of song, as we look up at the heavens to reflect on the past and dream of the future. This is a time for our community to gather and to share.
Our Matariki programme has been brilliantly curated by our musical director, Rachel Hyde. It brings together songs from around the world that share the universal human curiosity of the stars and their meaning - how they shape our lives and guide us.
At the centre of this programme is the premiere of our new commission for the occasion: Our Youngest Star - composed by the talented Takerei Komene with text by Stacey Teague. It is an ode to Hiwa-i-te-Rangi, the Carrier of Wishes. This was made possible with support from the Creative Communities Scheme.
This may be our most diverse programme yet, drawing from a range of musical traditions and cultures, and yet it continues to be rooted in our love of modern queer classics of the stage and radio: Seasons of Love and Go West will certainly delight.
Our focus is on sharing our music and building our community. Please be our guests for a light supper afterwards. We will be inviting a local queer charity to connect with you and fundraise, so please be generous in your support of a worthy cause.
The Glamaphones rehearses weekly at 6.30pm on Thursdays, at St Andrew’s on the Terrace. We do not audition and we welcome all to sing with us, as a rainbow community group. If you are keen to try, check out our website, talk to one of our members or email us: contact@glamaphones.org.nz
