The first 5 months of 2022 were by no means business as usual for secondary school choral programmes. Rehearsals on rugby fields, via zoom and with masks to the fore have been a reality for many school choirs during this time. However, despite the challenges of recent months, an exciting line up of 31 choirs are set to take the stage of the Michael Fowler Centre on Thursday 9 June, as part of The Big Sing (TBS) – Wellington Festival.

In acknowledgement of the difficulties schools have had to deal with there have been some changes to the festival this year. Choirs will perform two pieces instead of the usual three and this has allowed the usual two-day event to condense into a one-day extravaganza which, says Toni Wilson, the event co-ordinator, sets us up for an exhilarating day: “We will have more singers together, more choirs to listen to and a bigger Gala concert. A more festival vibe. It’s going to be an amazing music-filled day and evening”.

There will be two daytime sessions scheduled for 9.30am and 2pm where choirs will perform their two songs, followed by a blockbuster Gala Concert at 7pm where each choir will perform one item. Tickets for the gala concert will be available from Ticketmaster from Monday 16 May ($28 for adults / $18 for tertiary students and children). Daytime session tickets will be available on the door ($5 per session / $8 both sessions).

June 9th is your chance to hear some wonderful performances of some fabulous choral music. It really is an event you don’t want to miss.
