By the late 1960s, the Hollywood Western was dead. The classics of John Ford and Howard Hawks were decades in the past, and the only remaining cowboy lifeblood was coming out of Europe, particularly Italy and Spain. And there was one man truly responsible, the Spaghetti Western maestro - Sergio Leone.
Having made a name for himself on the global stage with his early 60s, Clint Eastwood, samurai-turned-cowboy "Dollars Trilogy," Leone unintentionally set out to make an ultimate Wild West opera. And Time Out magazine said, "If there had to be a final Western, Once Upon a Time in the West would be it."
The biggest obvious shakeup to the tired, cowboy scenario was casting long-time Hollywood leading man Henry Fonda as the blue-eyed, ice cold, man, woman, and child-killer Frank. For decades, Fonda was a well beloved hero-type, but this time around, Leone flipped that notion on its head. The film also stars a harmonica playing Charles Bronson, stage thespian Jason Robards, and the gorgeous, Italian Claudia Cardinale as a recent widow who is caught up in a deadly man's game.
Join us on the 30th of January for this exciting, fun, and glorious magnum opus of a western. AND come early to enjoy the best Mexican food around, as Dos Locos Taco joins us on the night. They'll be selling their glorious tacos, burritos, and churros from the cinema before the program. See you there!
