Somewhere In-Between Exhibition by Gareth Barlow
at Boyd-Dunlop Gallery
12 August - 2 September, 2022

My work often explores the spiritual concepts of two different cultures. Influenced by an Irish Catholic upbringing, although my parents encouraged a more liberal view on religion and left me to discover my own spiritual journey, and an environment blessed to be heavily influenced by Tangata Whenua and their culture.

It’s the people I meet and the stories they tell that compels me to create art. Connections through the land and distant whakapapa. Exploring ideas on polytheism and the dimensions ruled by these Gods. How they influence and encourage my world. How energy permeates and guides my work and challenges many aspects of my own Catholic upbringing.

I sometimes feel that on anyone’s art journey, if you don’t have more questions than answers, perhaps you’re not on the right path. This is especially true when your journey involves exploring the principles and philosophies of different cultures. Suddenly my perceptions of what may lie ahead now has leverage from many dimensions. And I find my beliefs happily resting in a place somewhere in-between.
