Otago Museum

Pounamu is traditionally carved into beautiful objects and jewellery. However, it is an incredibly tough stone and takes an expert to carve. Why not have a go at carving, but on something a bit easier …soap!

Skyla Anderson (Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāpuhi) Museum Guide – Kaiārahi will take you on a tour of the amazing wall of hei tiki, ancestral pendants in human form, and hei matau (fish hook pendants) in Kura Pounamu: Our Treasured Stone special exhibition. Then you can start carving your own work of art!

All materials are provided. You will be able to take home your fragrant treasure in a drawstring bag. It's also the perfect personalized gift for a loved one.

The guided tour will take approximately 30 minutes and the workshop around one hour. Suitable for ages 10 and over, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult*.

*An adult can supervise their child for free, but will need to buy a ticket if they also want to make a carving.

Meet on Atrium Level 1.
