Otago Museum

Pounamu is traditionally carved into beautiful objects and jewellery, but is an incredibly tough stone and takes an expert to carve. For the July School holidays, have a go at carving, but on something easier …soap!

Skyla Anderson (Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāpuhi) Museum Guide - Kaiārahi will take you on a tour of the amazing wall of hei tiki, ancestral pendants in human form, and hei matau (fish hook pendants) in Kura Pounamu: Our Treasured Stone special exhibition. Then you can start carving your own work of art!

All materials are provided, and you will be able to take your fragrant treasure home in a drawstring bag to scent your home or to gift to a loved one.

The guided tour will take approximately 30 minutes and the workshop will take approximately one hour. Suitable for ages 10 and over, but children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult*.

*An adult can supervise their child for free, but will need to buy a ticket if they also want to make a carving.

10.30am and 1.30pm, Monday 11 July and Thursday 21 July
Atrium Level 2

Bookings essential.
