COVID this, COVID that, cancel this concert, cancel that concert *sigh*... The pressure has been relentless, BUT we're opting to be optimistic and look for the silver lining among the clouds - this concert will go ahead!
With the challenges that we’ve all faced in the past two years, it has been so important to look to the silver linings of life. For many of us music is a balm and for our musicians, being able to gather together (when alert levels have allowed) and make music has certainly proven to be an important part of life. With very limited opportunities for public performances in the past nine months, the musicians of Hamilton City Brass are ready and excited for their first public performance together since July 2021.
Musical Director Mason Elliot has selected a varied programme for Hamilton City Brass’ return to the stage. Two of our principal players will feature with beautiful solos – Principal Cornet Todd Smith will perform the beautiful ‘Ballade’ by English composer John Golland. Principal Euphonium Ross McAdam will delight with the unashamedly lyrical euphonium concerto ‘Reverie’ by New Zealand composer Kenneth Young. It is notable to mention that Ross has recently been awarded Life Membership of Hamilton Citizens Band for his years of outstanding service and dedication both as a player and administrator.
Complementing these beautiful solo performances will be the atmospheric ‘Silver Mountain’ by Goff Richards – a Cornish composer dear to this band’s heart. We look to another well-known British composer Peter Graham for his new work ‘Strange New Worlds’. This was commissioned in 2020, however the Covid-19 pandemic meant that its premiere was performed virtually by the Great Britain Children’s Band in August 2020.
We’ll turn up the tempo with the upbeat ‘Los Hermanos de Bop’; Philip Harper’s carnival flavoured ‘Salsa Pa’gozar’ and ‘Blackbird Special’ from the New Orleans based Dirty Dozen Brassband famed for their unique blend of traditional brass band foundations with bebop jazz, funk and R&B/Soul. English composer Paul Lovatt-Cooper always brings excitement to his compositions and ‘Dreamcatchers’ is no different – featuring a selection of band soloists showcasing their technical abilities. The descriptive ‘Nordic Polska’ will also have your toes tapping!
Hamilton City Brass will bring you music that is reflective and music that is fun! This concert will lift our spirits and will surely lift yours too, so come join us for a great night at one of our favourite venues.
