Nockies Palette

Founder of Nockie's Palette, Michael Nock (Nockie) is a painter himself. In fact, becoming an artist was his dream when he was a teenager. With a bachelor's & master's degree in Fine Art from Cal-Arts (California Institute of Arts), he's still pursuing that dream today by practising.

"I painted my first painting at age 8. It was a landscape painting with cows in the distance. When my great aunt Lucy saw it she became very excited and decided to take me under her wing. The lessons she taught me have stayed with me my whole life. Aunt Lucy was a very accomplished Australian landscape painter who was largely self-taught, but she showed me how to develop perspective, how to compose a picture, use warm colours to bring items into the foreground and cool colours to receed. She taught me how to observe what I was looking at, that trees were not one kind of green but multiple varieties of brown greens, blue greens and yellow greens. She taught me that the sky was not just blue but had yellows and reds, and how it reflects some of the ground colours. She taught me the importance of drawing and of developing a painting with tonal umbers and ocher's as an underlay and how to mix my own palette. My class will try to pass some of these lifelong pearls of wisdom to a select group of willing enthusiasts. "
