In this workshop, you will make a one-piece mould, modelled on a glass piece from a secondhand store. You can bring your own glass cup, plate or bowl - although not all designs can be used for this process. There will also be a selection of secondhand goods for you to choose from in the studio.

Making a mould for slip casting allows you to make multiples of an object. Meaning you can make a matching set! The mould will take about a week to dry enough for use.*

Slip casting is a ceramic process using a special mix of liquid clay. The clay is poured into a plaster mould and left until an even sediment has settled inside of the mould. The excess liquid is then tipped out, revealing your piece. This process can be used to make cups, bowls, sculpture… the list goes on!

*Join the next ‘Slip Casting Workshop’ to try out your mould or get yourself some casting slip and try it out at home/your own studio.

Are you itching to try something new? To express your unique vision? To create something that’s not only beautiful but practical, too? Join my workshops and learn how to make gorgeous, functional ceramics that you can use every day. For beginners and beyond, these art classes are designed to provide a warm and welcoming place for you to unleash your imagination.

Shannon Courtenay is a Cardrona-based artist who works mainly in ceramics, using mould making, slip casting, and hand building methods to create pieces that verge on being indistinguishable from the originals. A principal theme in Shannon’s collections is river ecology, with a strong focus on the Cardrona River. Some of her new work involves digital and video art, exploring the intersection of classical ceramics techniques and technology.

Built in 2019, Shannon Courtenay Ceramics Studio is located on Kind Farm Animal Sanctuary in the idyllic Cardrona Valley. The Cardrona River flows through the sanctuary and the natural surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for endless inspiration.

“[Shannon] is a calm, easygoing teacher and I was immediately inspired by her unique ceramics and the peaceful studio space she has created. If you ever get the opportunity to undertake a ceramics workshop with Shannon, I highly recommend it! I hope Shannon’s space and work inspires you to pursue a creative venture that you have had brewing for a while.” -Josie McGuinness, Sunday Projects
