Writing your first play: workshop with Whiti Hereaka

Whiti Hereaka's plays are poetic, poignant and imaginative. In 2012 Whiti was the recipient of the Bruce Mason Playwriting Award and her other playwriting awards include Best Play by a Māori Playwright in the Adam New Zealand Play Awards for Te Kaupoi (2010) and Rona and Rabbit on the Moon (2011).

Rewena, written during one of her residencies at the Michael King Writers Centre, has been performed around Aotearoa and was published in the anthology Here/Now in 2015. In 2021 she participated in Climate Change Action Theatre and her play A Window was performed in the United States and Austria.

Whiti holds a Masters in Creative Writing (Scriptwriting) and teaches at the International Institute of Modern Letters, Victoria University. This two-hour workshop will help students get started on the playwriting process using guided exercises.
