Local musical talent, Fergus Byett, returns to start this year’s Midday Concert Series. After graduating from Tauhara College in 2018, Fergus accepted the offer of a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship to study Classical Performance (piano) at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music, where he has been under the tutelage of Katherine Austin.
During the course of his study there, his trio won the University of Waikato Chamber Music Competition, and he has also been a finalist in the UoW Concerto Competition. Following this upcoming recital, Fergus will be returning to Hamilton to compete in the UoW Concerto Finals for a second time.
As a composer, his choral and orchestral compositions have won national competitions, and his works have been performed across the North Island. Having just completed his degree, and now poised to undertake his Honours year, Fergus will present a 50-min solo piano recital at this year’s inaugural Midday Concert, featuring works by Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Beethoven and Albéniz.
Those wanting to attend the concert will be asked to present their vaccine pass on entry to the concert venue and to wear a mask unless presenting a mask exemption. The audience will be socially distanced when seated and limited to 100 people.
