Fifty years ago, inspired by the Black Panthers, a group of young leaders founded the Polynesian Panther Party to push back against systemic racism like the Dawn Raids. One of those founders was the brilliant Dr Melani Anae QSO, Marsden Award recipient and expert on ethics and Pasifika identity and leadership. In conversation with emerging leader Okirano Tilaia, Melani reflects on the apology for the Dawn Raids, and her book The Platform, detailing five decades spent in peaceful resistance, educating New Zealand about ongoing racism, and Pasifika empowerment.
