Nine things you need to know about Matariki and how we can celebrate New Zealand’s newest public holiday.

A free community event brought to you by Waitaki District Libraries.

Wednesday 22 June, 7pm, The Ink Box, Ōamaru Opera House
Thursday 23 June, 6.30am, The Lookout, Cape Wanbrow

This year is the first that Aotearoa – New Zealand will celebrate the unique time of Matariki – the beginning of the Māori lunar new year – with a national public holiday.

Waitaki District Libraries in partnership with Te Rūnanga o Moeraki invites you to two special events packaged together and spread over two days to captivate, inform and offer you and your whānau the opportunity to participate in the unique celebrations of Matariki.

The two events consist of an evening presentation by Victoria Campbell (Kāi Tahu) at the Ōamaru Opera House Ink Box sharing kōrero about tātai aroraki (astronomy) with a focus on Matariki. She will also discuss ways in which New Zealanders can acknowledge and celebrate the new Matariki public holiday with whānau.

The following morning, pre dawn, we will pick up again with Victoria at Makotukutuku, the Cape Wanbrow lookout, and spend time star-gazing. Justin Tipa (Kaiwhakahaere – Te Rūnanga o Moeraki) will also share kōrero and karakia as part of acknowledging the heliacal rising of Matariki. Waitaki District Libary staff will lead waiata and there will be an opportunity for all participants to reflect on the year that has been and look forward to the promise of the new year.

Bookings for this exclusive Matariki Mana Taiao package can only be made through the Ōamaru Opera House website and numbers are limited.
