Threads of time and place are woven together to create a rich tapestry of sound presented by Ariana Tikao and Bob Bickerton as they perform as Muriwai.

Taonga Puoro, Celtic Harp and natural soundscapes meet in a confluence of creativity inspired by pūrākau, Māori origin stories, as well as contemporary themes and future concepts.

In this concert a timeline is explored from Kāi Tahu creation stories through to the arrival of tākata (people), their impact on the world, and the consequences of their (and our) actions in times to come.

Ariana Tikao (Kāi Tahu) is a composer and performer of waiata in te reo Māori and English, as well as being an exponent of taonga puoro. She has written many waiata in the Kāi Tahu dialect and has performed extensively around Aotearoa. In 2020 the New Zealand Arts Foundation awarded her the Jillian Friedlander Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa Laureate Award.

Bob Bickerton is a performer of both traditional Irish music and taonga puoro and has recorded with Richard Nunns, Aroha Yates-Smith as well as many others. He has produced numerous projects including film scores, exhibition soundscapes and concerts and enjoys exploring acoustic instruments and natural soundscapes using modern technology. Bob was appointed as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the 2015 New Year’s Honours list for services to music.
