Join us at St. Andrew's on the Terrace for "Sensitivity versus Gallantry: the struggle between simplicity and complexity." This programme expresses the ongoing challenge of balancing both simple and complex kinds of musical expression. In this concert, two seemingly "simple" pieces are paired with two more eccentric works composed within a similar period, to highlight the contrast between these two kinds of expression. This will be followed by a finale with John Psathas's thrilling "Jettatura."

Liam Furey was taught piano at the age of nine, discovering classical music at eleven, and was inspired to work in classical music. Liam started lessons with pianist/composer Gillian Bibby, won the Senior Composition Prize for Chamber Music NZ’s 2016 Secondary School Contest, and received the LTCL (Distinction) and LMusNZ Piano diplomas in 2017. Now in his Honours year for Classical Piano and Composition at the New Zealand School of Music, Liam has learnt piano under Jian Liu, composition under Michael Norris. Liam has been a frequent finalist and winner in various competitions at the NZSM, composed orchestra works for the NZSM Orchestra and NZSO, and is a co-founder of the Sounds of Te Kōkī concert series, which solely premiers new works by NZSM composition students. Liam aspires to learn and create eclectic programmes that highlight newer ideas of musical expression for his audiences.
