Home was somewhere else, and then, Whangārei.
You arrived for many reasons, perhaps uncertain of how long you would stay.
Since then, something happened to connect you to this place.
You realised, this is home. You are part of Whangārei.
Before the world changes...Tell your story of what happened here to make this your home.

This free storytelling workshop for international and regional migrants to Whangārei, will embrace their multicultural identity and participation in Whangārei's current living history. It may also reveal personal stories of belonging here.

Professional artist and facilitator Renee Liang will support and prompt participants to explore who they are, their connection to their past, and their home here and now.

Stories developed from 1 of 2 storytelling workshops [2 July OR 23 July] will lead towards a private recording session with professional producer and interviewer Ren Lunicke. These recordings will become digitally accessible to the public in Spring 2022.

'Stories' could come in many forms including spoken word, song, image, and other mediums. They do not necessarily have to be in English. Fluency is not required. Group and family stories are also welcomed as long as they are personal experiences. Participation in the project is all ages. Previous storytelling experience is not required.

In October, participants will have an opportunity to perform their story if they choose to do so.

This is a community based project in collaboration with Multicultural Whangārei, Zir Productions, Renee Liang, Fred Tito, and with support from the Whangārei District Council Creative Community Scheme.

*The venue is mobility accessible, but please let us know how we can support any access needs (mobility or otherwise).*

Lunch is provided with RSVP. Please email landinginwhangarei@gmail.com with any dietary restrictions at least 3 days prior to the events.

There are 2 workshop dates 2 July and 23 July. Participants may RSVP for either, but not more than one.

Public hui for this project will take place 11 June at Multicultural Whangārei @ 11am, and 16 June at the Whangārei Central Library, May Bain Room @4pm.
