Verdi - Messa da Requiem

Verdi's Requiem, like Brahms' A German Requiem, is a personal statement of grief that uses form and text borrowed from church liturgy.

Although neither Verdi (nor Brahms) was particularly devout, the words of the Catholic Requiem Mass for the Dead act as an expressive conduit for the universal need to express emotions when a beloved person dies: grief, loss, sadness, anger, fear of judgement, and the hope of lasting peace for both the deceased and the bereaved. From the beginning, it is clear that Verdi conceived this gripping, operatic Requiem for performance, not worship.

The CSO welcomes the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs to the Town Hall stage as they join forces with the CSO Chorus and a stellar cast of soloists.

No other Requiem comes close to matching the drama and tension of Verdi's and the ebb and flow of emotion equals that of any grand opera. The passion of Verdi's music, the operatic vocabulary, the soaring melodies, the dazzling orchestration and the work's extraordinary dramatic and emotional intensity, all contribute to the Requiem's importance as one of the masterpieces of Western music.
