Berlioz - Overture 'Le Carnival Romain"
Saint-Saëns - Piano Concerto No.5, Op.103, F major (Egyptian)
Dvořák - Symphony No.7, Op.70, D minor
Luke Dollan - Conductor
Somi Kim - Piano
The Roman Carnival Overture is one of Hector Berlioz's most popular works and is considered one of the greatest showpieces in the orchestral repertoire.
Saint-Saëns enjoyed escaping the unappealing Parisian winters and traveling to warmer climes including Egypt, where he completed his fifth Piano Concerto in Cairo in 1896. This refreshingly cheerful work will be performed by Somi Kim, who has established herself as one of today's most highly regarded young pianists with a string of competition successes and an extensive concert experience.
Arguably Dvořák's finest symphony, the D minor symphony represents a mastery of form equal to that of Schubert or Brahms but explores a deeper meaning that audiences had come to envisage from the writer of popular Slavonic dances. This work is typically full of wonderfully spacious melodies and a wealth of thematic ideas.
