Day 1, Friday 19 August 2022
Pāteke Room
Level 2, Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne,
57 Waiapu Road, Karori, Wellington

What to expect Day 1:
• We commence with a mihi whakatau then our first presentation; Moriori and kōpi (karaka/corynocarpus laevigatus) and its enormous significance to the people of Rēkohu/Wharekauri/Chatham Islands.
• A panel discussion will follow featuring a range of perspectives on the often-polarizing issue of whether to remove or retain karaka/kōpi/corynocarpus laevigatus particularly in places it is non-indigenous to, is it a weed or taonga, why remove it, why keep it, who makes the decision?
• Do dogs die by eating karaka/kōpi/corynocarpus laevigatus fruit? How do we know this, do autopsies or blood samples confirm this, is it speculation, theorizing, or, scientific fact, what do historical and contemporary evidence reveal, what do the vets know?

Day 2, Saturday 20 August 2022
Leonard Cockayne Centre, Ōtari Wilton’s Bush
160 Wilton’s Road, Wilton, Wellington

What to expect Day 2:
• Gather around a cauldron of fresh boiling karaka/kōpi/corynocarpus laevigatus as presenters with extensive experience in processing karaka/kōpi/corynocarpus laevigatus kōrero about its history, whakapapa and share a step-by-step tutorial on how to forage and prepare the kernels for safe consumption and preservation, and, share their favourite recipes.
• Kōrero will also include the chemical signatures of karaka/kōpi/corynocarpus laevigatus, including how much karakin is left in a processed kernel, and, how many you would need to consume before there were any ill effects.
• We are hoping to measure the toxicity levels through the process with staff from the School of Chemistry from Te Herenga Waka/Victoria University of Wellington. (this is to be confirmed)
• Kōrero will be accompanied by short films, Q and A’s, the practical and conversations informally within the incredible Ōtari Wilton’s Gardens based in the Leonard Cockayne Centre.
